An experimental moving image work utilizing a short story which I co-wrote with GPT-3 as a primary source for generating visual outcomes in Disco Diffusion. Whilst sharing the same set of messages (known as “text prompt”), the left image was done in 3D mode without initial image, the right one was generated in 2D mode employing “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” as the starting point.

A group of samurai is marching up a mountain. The samurai are clad in traditional clothing and armor, and are carrying swords and other weapons. They are followed by a group of servants carrying supplies. Suddenly the sun went down. The samurai stop and set up camp for the night. They build a fire and eat a meal. Then they sit around the fire and talk. What are we going to eat tonight?, they think. They have a lot of rice, but not much else. One of the samurai speaks up. I am going to hunt for some game. I will be back soon. The others nod and he sets off into the darkness. He doesn’t return that night, or the next. The others begin to worry. On the third day, one of the servants goes to look for him. He finds the samurai’s body, lying in a pool of blood. His throat has been cut. The others mourn his death, and then bury him. They continue on their journey, but they are now on edge, watching for any sign of danger. However, one of them turn on a vintage television he found near the camp. They all watch in horror as a newscast plays, showing footage of the samurai’s killer, a giant, monstrous creature that stalks the night, preying on humans. The samurai now know that they are up against a fearsome foe. They must be extra careful from now on, and be prepared to fight for their lives. Suddenly, the samurai who went for hunting the other night showed up and said I’m sorry, I got lost. The leader of the group asked him what happened and he replied I was attacked by a giant creature, but I managed to kill it. The others are relieved and happy to have him back. They now know that they can defeat this creature. They will be ready for anything from now on.
