Cosmic Tone

Utilizing some principles of “Sonification”, used by NASA’s Chandra X-ray Center (CXC) to translate the relationships in data into sound, “Cosmic Tone” is a visual and auditory display, constructed from astronomical images which were digitally manipulated and transformed into a sequence of glitch abstract images.

A portion of 60 x 60 pixel, seen as a white square frame continuously moving across the video image from left to right and top to bottom, represents the boundary where a set of visual data at different regions of the video image is collected and interpreted into various pitches of sound. The glitch effect and audio work were completely achieved by coding in Processing.

The entire video is divided into 3 fragments according to the red, green and blue value of the video image, used to conduct the bizarre soundscape in each section.
